Gortyn in Municipality of Gortys

You're standing among the remains of Gortyna, in the south of Crete. In ancient times this was the second most important city on the island. Only Knossos, about thirty kilometres away, outshone it. Take a look across the plain. The river Lethaeus once flowed here, and some sixteen kilometres to the south lay the sea, with the city's two harbours.
