You're standing at the Gortyn code, one of the oldest written law codes in Europe. It was never written on paper. It was carved into stone. Look at the wall in front of you. It holds twelve columns of text, together about ten metres long and one and a half metres high. That's around six hundred lines. Apart from one other inscription, it's the longest ancient Greek text in stone we know of.
