You're standing at Liauckama State, just outside the village of Sexbierum. This was once one of the largest noble estates in Friesland, the fortified home of the Liauckama family. The castle itself is gone. But look at the gate. That gatehouse still stands, with a keystone dated 1604. See the small holes in the wall? Those are for pigeons. The residents kept them for food and for manure.
