You're standing at the Strépy-Thieu boat lift, on the Canal du Centre in the Belgian province of Hainaut. Take a look up. That huge block is 117 metres tall, 135 metres long and 81 metres wide. It isn't a factory or an office tower. It's a lift, only this one carries ships. It bridges a height difference of just over 73 metres. When it was finished in 2002, it was the tallest boat lift in the world. Only in 2016 did the ship lift at China's Three Gorges Dam take the title.
