You're standing at Corfe Castle, the ruin rising high above the village of the same name in Dorset. First, take a look at the hill itself. The castle sits right in a gap in a long line of chalk hills, carved out by two streams. That's where the name comes from: Corfe goes back to an Old English word meaning 'a cutting'. Whoever held this hill controlled the road between Wareham and Swanage.
