You're standing on the Scout campsite of Brownsea Island, out in Poole Harbour. This is where, in the summer of 1907, something started that would spread across the whole world: Scouting. Robert Baden-Powell was famous as the hero of the siege of Mafeking in the Boer War. He was writing his book Scouting for Boys and wanted to test his ideas on real boys first. This island was perfect. Cut off from the press, yet only a short ferry ride from Poole.
