You're standing in Xanthos, once the leading city of the Lycians, the ancient people of this coast. Around 390 BC a tomb stood here that looked like a Greek temple: the Nereid Monument. Picture a tall base decorated with sculpted friezes, topped by a small temple with four columns on the short sides and six on the long ones. Between the columns stood life-size female figures in wind-blown robes. At their feet swam dolphins and a cuttlefish. That's why we call them Nereids, sea nymphs.
