You're standing at Cawdor Castle, in the Scottish parish of Cawdor, not far east of Inverness. Does the name ring a bell? In Shakespeare's Macbeth, the title character is made Thane of Cawdor. But that story is heavily fictionalised. The real Macbeth lived in the eleventh century, long before this castle existed, and the play never actually mentions it. The 5th Earl Cawdor once grumbled that he wished the Bard had never written his damned play.
