You're standing at Fort George, on the Moray Firth, north-east of Inverness. Have a good look around. At first glance you can hardly see a fort at all, just sloping grassy banks. That's exactly the point. Earth banks like these soaked up cannonballs far better than stone ever could. The fort sits on a narrow spit of land with the sea on three sides. Only the landward side, where you are now, was a weak spot.
