You're standing at the fortress of New Navarino, just by Pylos. Locals simply call it Niokastro, the new castle. That's to tell it apart from the old castle on the other side of the bay. Look across the water to the north. That's where Crusaders guarded the northern entrance to the bay back in the thirteenth century. This fortress guards the southern one.
