You're standing at Les Antiques, just south of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, at the foot of the Alpilles. These two Roman monuments have stood above ground for some two thousand years. Start with the tall mausoleum. It rises in three stages, topped by a little round temple with columns and a roof carved like fish scales. Inside stand two figures in togas, though their heads were replaced in the eighteenth century. Along the side facing the old road, an inscription tells you three brothers of the Julius family dedicated this to their parents. Lower down, the reliefs show battles, including Greeks and Trojans fighting over the body of Patroclus, and a wild boar hunt.
