You're standing at Lincoln Castle, high above the city. It's one of the best preserved castles in England. William the Conqueror had it built in the late eleventh century, not long after his victory at Hastings in 1066. The north of England was still resisting him, so he needed strong points. He found one right here, on the remains of a Roman fortress, sixty metres above the countryside to the south and west. That fortress, Lindum Colonia, is where the name Lincoln comes from. To clear the ground, 166 empty houses were pulled down.
