You're standing on the site of ancient Tegea, once one of the oldest and most powerful towns of Arcadia, in the heart of the Peloponnese. Today the village of Alea sits here, about ten kilometres southeast of Tripoli. Take a look around at the wide upland plain. For centuries, Tegea quarrelled with its neighbour Mantineia over exactly this land, over borders and over the channels that watered the plain.
