You're standing at the remains of the Temple of Athena Alea, in ancient Tegea. The people here worshipped a rather special goddess. She was Athena, merged with Alea, a local goddess. This spot mattered as early as the tenth century BC. The sanctuary was a badge of identity for the Tegeans. Finds here show they were in touch with neighbouring regions like the Argolid and Laconia.
