You're standing at Veveří Castle, about twelve kilometres northwest of central Brno. It sits on a rocky spur above the Svratka River. The name literally means 'squirrel's'. Legend says Duke Conrad of Brno built a hunting lodge here in the eleventh century. The first reliable record dates from 1213, when King Ottokar the First used the castle as a prison for rebellious nobles.
