You're standing at Verrès Castle, on a rocky outcrop high above the town and the Évançon river. Take a good look at its shape. No fancy turrets, no decorated façades, just a stark, austere block of stone, about thirty metres on each side. In places the walls are more than two and a half metres thick. That plainness is exactly what made it special. Most castles around here were a cluster of separate buildings inside a circuit wall. This one packs everything into a single cube.
