Forte di Bard

You're standing at Fort Bard, at the entrance to the Aosta Valley in northwestern Italy. Look up at that huge fortress on the rock above the little town of Bard. The valley is narrow here, a real gorge above the Dora Baltea river. Anyone travelling between Italy and France had to pass this way. That's why there's been a stronghold on this spot for a very long time.
