You're standing at Lycosura, on a wooded hill in southern Arcadia. In the second century, the Greek travel writer Pausanias called this the oldest city in the world, founded by Lycaon, son of Pelasgus. There's no proof of that, though. Nothing older than the fourth century BC has ever turned up. Most of the town is still buried. What you're looking at is mainly the sanctuary of Despoina.
