You're standing at the Museo Nazionale di San Matteo, Pisa's national museum. Take a good look at the building. It doesn't look like a modern art gallery at all, and there's a reason for that. This used to be the medieval Convent of San Matteo. Where religious communities once lived and prayed, you'll now find art gathered from the churches of Pisa and its surrounding province. The museum sits right on the bank of the Arno, by the way.
