You're standing at the Museum der bildenden Künste, the Museum of Fine Arts, which locals often just call the Bildermuseum. Take a good look at how this block is put together. In the middle rises a sleek, rectangular building thirty-four metres tall. Around it, in the corners, lower angled buildings line the streets. So the museum actually sits inside a courtyard, with a way in on all four sides. A Berlin firm of architects won a Europe-wide competition with this design in 1997. It took fifteen years before all those corner buildings were finished.
