You're standing at Dumbarton Rock, the dark, twin-peaked rock where the River Leven meets the Clyde. Dumbarton Castle sits right on top. Take a good look at that rock first. It's what's left of a volcano, more than three hundred million years old. The softer outside wore away over time, and the hard core of basalt stayed put. The higher peak is called White Tower Crag, a little over seventy metres tall. The other one is known as the Beak.
