You're standing near the site of Abydos, an ancient Greek port on the Asian side of the Dardanelles, close to Çanakkale. In ancient times these straits were called the Hellespont. Look across the water to the other side. That's where Sestos stood, on the peninsula we now call Gallipoli. The straits are at their narrowest here, which made Abydos one of the main crossing points between Europe and Asia for centuries.
