You're standing at Maeshowe, on Mainland, in the Orkney islands. From the outside you see a grassy mound about 35 metres across and just over seven metres high, with a ditch around it. It rises from a flat plain near the Loch of Harray. When it was built, the landscape probably looked much like it does now: open and treeless.
