You're standing at the Pula Arena, a Roman amphitheatre in this Croatian harbour town. Take a look at that huge oval wall of limestone. On the side facing the sea it rises three storeys, but on the other side only two. That's because the Romans built their arena against a slope. Try counting the arches: the two lower rows have seventy-two each, and the top row has sixty-four rectangular openings. And can you see the four towers? They held tanks of perfumed water, used for a fountain or sprinkled over the crowd.
