You're standing at Monmouth Castle, on a hill above the River Monnow, just off the centre of Monmouth. Have a look around. There isn't much castle left. You'll see fragments of the Great Tower, the Hall and some walls. And right among them sits a stately house that looks nothing like a fortress. That's Great Castle House, built in 1673 by Henry Somerset, the first Duke of Beaufort, on the very spot where the old round tower once stood.
