You're standing at Saltstraumen, a narrow strait about ten kilometres southeast of Bodø. Take a good look at the water. What looks like a river is really the sea, squeezing itself through a bottleneck. This channel between the islands of Straumøya and Knaplundsøya links the Saltfjord with the vast Skjerstad Fjord. And it carries one of the strongest tidal currents in the world.
