You're standing at Marienburg Castle, high up on the Marienberg hill near Pattensen, about a hundred and thirty-five metres above sea level. Take a good look. It looks like a medieval fortress straight out of a fairy tale, but it isn't medieval at all. It went up in the late 1850s and was finished in 1867, entirely in Gothic Revival style. The design team was led by Conrad Wilhelm Hase, one of Hanover's most influential architects.
