You're standing at the Arena of Nîmes, a Roman amphitheatre that's nearly two thousand years old. It was built around the year 100, only about twenty years after the Colosseum in Rome, and it's one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres anywhere. Have a look along the façade. There are two storeys, each with sixty arches, rising about twenty-one metres. Down below you'll see sturdy pilasters, and above them columns on tall pedestals. Of the top rim that once crowned it all, only fragments remain.
