You're standing at the Pont de pierre, the old stone bridge across the Garonne in Bordeaux. Take a look along the bridge towards the other bank. It's 487 metres long and nineteen metres wide, and it rests on sixteen piers with seventeen arches between them. Legend has it that number isn't a coincidence: 'Napoléon Bonaparte' has exactly seventeen letters. Go ahead and count.
