You're standing at Chirk Castle, Castell y Waun in Welsh, in the north-east of Wales. Take a good look at those thick walls. The castle was built in 1295 by Roger Mortimer de Chirk, as one of the fortresses Edward I used to keep his grip on north Wales. From here you guarded the way into the Ceiriog Valley, and the castle ran the whole border lordship of Chirkland.
