You're standing on the Great St Bernard Pass, 2,469 metres up, between Switzerland and Italy. Look around. Not a tree in sight, just bare rock, moss and, if you're lucky, alpine flowers. Wood for building and heating always had to be hauled up from far below. The little lake by the road stays frozen for much of the year, and in winter the snow can be ten metres deep.
