You're standing at the Ameland lighthouse. Look up: over 55 metres tall, with fifteen floors. This tower is made of cast iron. It was built around 1880 on the orders of King William the Third, to replace an older lighthouse. Quirinus Harder designed it, and a foundry in Deventer made the parts. They were shipped to the island and stacked up right here, like a giant construction kit.
