You're standing in the Valle di Maddaloni, at the Aqueduct of Vanvitelli, also known as the Caroline Aqueduct. Look up. Three tiers of arches, one on top of the other, bridge the whole valley here, from Monte Longano in the east to Monte Garzano in the west. This section is 529 metres long and 55.8 metres high at its highest point. The arches are made of tufa, and the inspiration is easy to spot: the arched aqueducts of ancient Rome.
