You're standing in a courtyard in the heart of Erfurt, tucked away behind the houses on Fischmarkt, Michaelisstraße and Waagegasse. A narrow alley brought you here. And that hidden spot is exactly what saved this building. In front of you is the Old Synagogue, one of the best preserved medieval synagogues in Europe. Because its roof is still intact, it's thought to be the oldest complete synagogue building in the world.
