You're standing in front of Sens Cathedral, dedicated to Saint Stephen. This was the very first cathedral in France built in the Gothic style. Archbishop Henri Sanglier got it started around 1130, in the same years that Abbot Suger was rebuilding the Basilica of Saint-Denis near Paris. Back then Sens was a powerful place. Its archbishop even had Paris under his authority.
