You're standing at Conwy Castle, on the north coast of Wales. Since 2024, Cadw, who look after it, have used only its Welsh name, Castell Conwy, in English too. Look at those eight great towers, each about twenty-one metres tall. The castle hugs a rocky ridge on the coast, and much of its grey stone came from that ridge itself. It wasn't good enough for carving windows and other details, so more colourful sandstone was brought in, from places like Chester. Originally the whole castle was whitewashed.
