You're standing at Tauresium, an archaeological site near the little village of Taor, about twenty kilometres southeast of Skopje. Locally the spot goes by the name Gradište. It may look modest, but this is where one of the great lives of Byzantine history began. Around the year 482, the emperor Justinian was born here. And as if that weren't enough, Theodahad, later king of the Ostrogoths, is said to have been born here too.
