You're standing at the Arch of Germanicus in Saintes, a gateway that's more than two thousand years old. Start with its shape. There are two arches side by side, one for each direction of traffic. The Romans were already thinking about lanes. The whole thing is almost fifteen metres tall and nearly sixteen metres wide, with walls close to four metres thick.
