You're standing at the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres, the home town of Salvador Dalí. At the heart of this building is the old town theatre that Dalí knew as a child. It was also where one of the first public exhibitions of his work was held. During the Spanish Civil War the theatre burned, and it lay in ruins for decades. In 1960, Dalí and the mayor of Figueres decided to turn it into a museum. It opened in 1974 and kept growing into the mid-1980s, taking in neighbouring buildings and courtyards.
