You're standing at Zincirli Höyük, an ancient mound in the valley near İslahiye. Almost three thousand years ago this was Sam'al, the capital of a small Aramaean kingdom. Take a look around first. Behind you rise the Amanus Mountains. This narrow valley is the northernmost tip of the Great Rift, the crack in the earth's crust that runs all the way down to Mozambique.
