You're standing at the Castalian Spring in Delphi, in the ravine between the Phaedriades, the steep cliffs that tower over the sanctuary. Listen for a moment. This was once the most sacred water in the whole Greek world. Everyone who came to Delphi stopped here first. Athletes competing in the Pythian Games washed and drank here. Above all, pilgrims came by on their way to the famous oracle. Even the Pythia, the priestess who spoke the prophecies, and the priests cleansed themselves here before the oracle began.
