You're standing at the Koules, the Venetian fortress guarding the entrance to Heraklion's old harbour. Start with its shape. There's a tall rectangular block and a slightly lower, rounded section facing the sea. In places the walls are almost nine metres thick. The Italians called it Castello a Mare, the castle on the sea.
