You're standing at Vadstena Castle, on the shore of Lake Vättern in Sweden. Take a look at the moat, the ramparts and the four round towers on the corners. They give away what this place was first built for. In 1545, King Gustav I put up a fortress here to protect Stockholm from enemies coming from the south. Back then there were three small stone buildings by the lake, with wide ramparts, a courtyard and cannon towers. Those stone buildings now form the ground floor of the castle. The original ramparts were pulled down in the nineteenth century. The ones you see today opened in 1999.
