You're standing among the ruins of Heraclea Lyncestis, about two kilometres south of Bitola. Take a look around. These stones were once a thriving city, founded around the middle of the fourth century BC by Philip the Second of Macedon, father of Alexander the Great. He named it after the hero Heracles. The second part of the name comes from Lynkestis, the old kingdom Philip conquered here.
