You're standing near Vulcănești, in the south of Moldova. In the summer of 1770, this is where the Ottoman army pitched its fortified camp, on the heights along the left bank of the Cahul River. Take a look around. The river runs to the west, and to the east lie small lakes and marshes. This ground saw one of the largest battles of the eighteenth century. The Russians call it the Battle of Kagul. The Turks call it the Battle of the Eagle Plain.
