You're standing at the Douaumont Ossuary, right in the middle of the old Verdun battlefield. Start by looking at the shape of the building. It's a hundred and thirty-seven meters long, with a tall tower in the centre. That's deliberate. The whole memorial represents a sword driven into the ground up to its hilt. The tower is the grip, the two long wings are the crossguard. On the walls you'll spot coats of arms. Those belong to the towns that helped pay for it.
