You're standing at Waddesdon Manor, a country house in the Buckinghamshire countryside. And yet it feels like you've wandered into France. Look at those towers, the steep roofs and that richly decorated façade. Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild wanted a house like the great Renaissance châteaux of the Loire Valley. So his French architect, Gabriel-Hippolyte Destailleur, borrowed features from several of them. The towers come from the Château de Maintenon. The twin staircase towers on the north side were inspired by Chambord. Only here the windows are glazed, and the decoration is even fancier.
