You're standing on the rim of the Verdon Gorge, close to the village of La Palud-sur-Verdon. Take a look down. Far below you runs the Verdon, a river with a striking turquoise-green colour. That colour comes from fine rock flour suspended in the water, washed down from the mountains. The limestone walls here are up to seven hundred metres high. At the top, the edges can be a kilometre and a half apart, yet down at the water the gorge narrows to just six metres in places.
