You're standing at Brougham Castle, a medieval castle about two miles south-east of Penrith. First, take in the spot itself. Close by, the rivers Eamont and Lowther meet. The Romans liked that too. Their fort, Brocavum, stood here where three Roman roads crossed. To your left as you walk up the path, you can still see its earthworks. The name Brougham comes from the Angles and means the village by the fort.
