You're standing at High Force, a waterfall on the River Tees, near Middleton-in-Teesdale. Just listen for a moment. That roar is the entire river, plunging over an almost vertical cliff, about twenty-one metres down. Look at the rock in the middle. Most of the time the water only pours down one side. After heavy rain, the usually dry channel on the right fills up too, and you get two falls side by side. Very occasionally the river even spills over the central rock. The last recorded time was December 2015, after Storm Desmond. And in harsh winters the falls can freeze into ice formations that look like a cathedral.
